For Those Who Gave All WE REMEMBER! |
Fellow member, |
Inspired by a war-scarred field of bright red poppies that he saw in the spring of 1915, Canadian Soldier Lt. Col. John McCrae wrote the powerful poem “In Flanders Fields.” With fewer than 100 words, McCrae honored the lives lost in World War I and spurred a timeless movement of using the poppy as a symbol of remembrance within the military community. |
More than 645,000 have lost their lives in service to our country since World War I. Today, more than 100 years since the end of the war, we have a profound opportunity to remember their ultimate sacrifice with a moment of silence, a reverent act or a thoughtful gesture of thanks. I hope you will join USAA this year as we pay tribute to the fallen. Please visit usaa.com/memorialday for ways to honor these heroes of the battlefield or post your own tribute on social media using the hashtag #PoppyInMemory. |
As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve you. |
Sincerely, |
Wayne Peacock |
USAA President & CEO |
Spread the Word! Voters in Alameda County and across the state of California are voting now! What happens in the District Attorney’s race in Alameda County will impact counties across this state by showing them what is possible to protect public safety and build communities and public trust. The election is happening now. Voting ends on June 7th.
Learn more about Pamela’s platform and plans for Alameda County.
Let me tell you about my friend Pamela…
Pamela is an award-winning civil rights attorney who has spent her 40-year career fighting for human rights and standing in the gap for everyday people against sex, race, and gender discrimination and harrassment.
Her journey to justice began as a civil rights activist who was arrested at 13 years old in a civil rights demonstration. From there, she survived the Ohio juvenile justice and foster care system and made it to Yale University. At Yale, she became the lead plaintiff in the groundbreaking Title IX case - Alexander (Price) v. Yale - which established that sexual harrassment in education is illegal. Pamela’s case taught her that lawyers can be advocates for change and support movements for human rights, so she left New Haven with her BA in Political Science and came to California to attend UC Berkeley Law School.
In 2002, a decade after opening her own law firm, she successfully argued in the United States Supreme Court in Amtrak v. Morgan, receiving a 5-4 decision with the majority opinion written by Clarence Thomas. This case established the “continuing violation” doctrine that still applies to all discrimination cases brought under federal law in the United States. Currently, Pamela has 13 published opinions, and has been named a Northern California Super Lawyer every year since 2004.
Now, Pamela wants to use her years of experience and expertise to bring transparency, equity, accountability and compassion to the District Attorney’s office in Alameda County.
I encourage you to learn more about Pamela’s incredible story and high profile law career.
