Wayne lost his mom on May 24th. She was 90 years old.

A WORD:
Thomas Edison was determined to invent a commercially viable electric light bulb. He knew the value it would bring to the average person. Yet after countless failed attempts, his friends and family began to ask if he was ready to give up. The story is told of a newspaper reporter who asked Edison if he felt like a failure. Edison replied, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
In today’s psalm, David faced adversity. We do not know exactly what trial he was facing, but it was significant enough that people around him encouraged him to “flee like a bird to your mountain” (v. 1). Their advice was to run away! After all, wicked men were dangerous. They hid in the shadows and attempted to assassinate the righteous (v. 2). David’s problems were not just these men, but that the very foundations of society were being destroyed (v. 3). The moral order had fallen away. What could a righteous person do but run?
David had an answer. Instead of running, we can choose to look up. “The Lord is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne” (v. 4). The wicked may seem like they are getting away with murder. It may look like there is no hope for the upright. But David knew that was not the full picture. The Lord sits on the throne and will hold the wicked accountable. He is not aloof to human oppression, but carefully examines “everyone on earth” (v. 4). In His justice, He will judge the wicked and uphold the upright. We can trust in this because the Lord “hates” evil, but “loves justice” (vv. 5, 7). We can choose faith in our incorruptible God.
Most people are deeply shaped by their upbringing. They embody patterns of behavior they saw in their parents and pass that down to their children. It is difficult to break patterns of generational sin and dysfunction. Yet, this is exactly what the Lord called Israel to do in the first prophetic message of Zechariah.
The idolatry, oppression, and unfaithfulness of Israel’s ancestors led to their exile and destruction. In Zechariah 1, the Lord warned Israel, “Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the earlier prophets proclaimed” (v. 4). Instead, He called them to change their ways. The Lord had miraculously allowed Israel to return from exile. He now gave them a chance to start over. The people of Israel resolved to get it right this time (v. 6).
Shortly after the first message, the Lord came again to Zechariah. The message is carefully dated by the reign of a Persian king (v. 7). This reminded Israel that they were still under the thumb of a foreign empire. Yet, the message is hopeful. Zechariah saw angels mounted on horses roaming the earth (v. 10). These angelic beings reported back what they discovered—a world at peace (v. 11). This peace was a contrast to the ruin of Jerusalem. The angel of the Lord pleaded on behalf of Judah and Jerusalem (v. 12). The Lord responded by promising a future for Jerusalem in which, “My towns will again overflow with prosperity” (v. 17). This promise looks forward to the time when the Messiah Jesus will return and rule from Jerusalem (Jer. 31:38–40; Isa. 60:4–9). The call to believers today is the same as it was to Israel, “Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4:8).
