July Sharing!

Below from Wallace:
"Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people".
Eleanor Roosevelt

"You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." - Mark Twain

Below from Rikki:
"Being human, we are imperfect. That's why we need each other. To catch each other when we falter. To encourage each other when we lose heart. Some may lead; others may follow; but none of us can go it alone."
~Hilary Clinton

How to deal with Robo Calls:

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a time to bring awareness to the unique challenges that racial and ethnic minorities in the United States face when it comes to mental illness. In 2020, fewer than one in every two African American adults got care for mental health. In 2018, Asian Americans were 60 percent less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic Whites. Obstacles for many include a lack of health insurance, less access to treatment, and stigma.

Mental illness can affect women of all races and ethnicities. Show your support this month and beyond by learning more about mental health. You can also use and share the resources below to help spread awareness about mental health in your communities and families. https://www.fda.gov/consumers/knowledge-and-news-women-owh-blog/national-minority-mental-health-awareness-month

A Challenge for July from Daily Challenge Connect
Connect to your community and learn 1 piece of trivia about your city or town.

WHAT TO DO: Type the name of where you live (city or town, state/province) and the word "history" into your browser. Then take a step back in time and learn one fact about where you live. When was it settled? Did it ever have another name? Who made it famous? Is it well known for something? Does it have a nickname? Share your findings here with the rest of us!

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Knowing a little bit of history of where you live will increase your bonds to your community and help you feel more connected to your neighbors. It may even help you feel more civically engaged the next time you decide whether or not to take the time to vote on a referendum or attend a town meeting.

LESSON: Are you connected
to your community?

You already know what you choose to eat and drink as well as how much exercise and sleepyou get impacts your health. But did you also know so does your level of connection to
 your family,
 your friends, and to
ツ the community you live in?

If you knew it could positively impact your health, would you become connected or increase your connections?

So what defines a community?
For many, it’s a sense of cohesiveness among a group of people.
For generations, a community served a vital role in terms of offering camaraderie and acting as a support system.

Well-connected communities are usually healthier, more vibrant, and more engaging and democratic than disconnected ones.

With COVID issues still an issue impacting busy schedules, frequency of changing jobs, homes, and locations, it makes it harder to feel any sense of community. It’s too easy to become isolated in your home, even though isolation can create a sense of loneliness and depression, let alone detachment from others and breakdowns in your community.

Research has shown people excluded from their community or who have limited connection to others, are more likely to have reduced levels of quality not only in their physical health but mental health as well. Yet when connections are strong and robust in a community, residents are generally healthier, happier, and as a result, more involved and engaged in civic life. ツ

ツ Participate in random acts of kindness (such as sharing your smile);
ツ Attend community events;
ツ Lend a hand to causes you support;
ツ Join a club or other social organization;
ツ Make purchases from local merchants;
ツ Participate in your neighborhood association;
ツ Personally welcome newcomers to your community;
ツ Meet your neighbors or regularly interact with them;
ツ Volunteer to help make your community a better place;
ツ Participate in local events in your neighborhood and/or city;
ツ Acknowledge a passerby in your neighborhood or at your job;
ツ Coordinate or attend a neighborhood or community event or party;
ツ Have friends in your community you can regularly connect with, talk to, and do things with;*
ツ Make an extra effort to talk with someone who may have a different background or perspective than your own; and
ツ Support elementary, junior high and high schools, community colleges or universities, which tend to be cornerstones in a thriving community.

Interesting fact: Relationships with friends and family immensely adds to the quality of your life and these social ties can help you live longer! ツ
